Pundit

A web annotation tool for researchers to empower note taking.

About the Pilot

Net7 Srl is an Italian IT company founded in 2002 in Pisa, focusing on Open Source technology-based solutions and applied research, particularly in Text Analytics, Data Processing, and Semantic Web technologies within the domains of Social Sciences and Humanities.

With about 50 employees, the company has a notable portfolio of applications for commercial companies and research institutes, together with a significant number of participations in Research projects. One of its products is the Pundit web annotation service, which helps users, in particular researchers and scholars, to create annotations, that is to “take notes” on web documents like HTML pages and PDF files.

Amongst Pundit’s distinguished features are the support of semantic annotations, the possibility to collect annotations in containers (Notebooks), that can be also shared with other users, a centralised web-app, a proxy service to use Pundit from mobile devices and a standard compliant set of APIs.

The EOSC DIH pilot was concentrated on three main pillars:

  • supporting Net7 in onboarding Pundit in the EOSC marketplace
  • granting us the computer resources to experiment on how to deploy Pundit out of Amazon AWS
  • supporting Net7 to analyse the possible use cases and business exploitation options for Pundit.

HOW DID CITE BECOME INVOLVED WITH EOSC DIH?

Being involved in the implementation of services at the European level (e.g. the GoTriple platform, enlisted in the EOSC catalogue), Net7 was well aware of the importance of having a solution like Pundit included into this marketplace.

EOSC-DIH was brought to attention through word of mouth.

WHAT SERVICES WERE USED?

Both consultancy services and infrastructure offering (a virtual server to conduct some development experiments) were used in the pilot.

ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE OF WORKING WITH EOSC DIH AND THE VALUE OF EOSC FOR THE PILOT:

“Beyond the achievements obtained and mentioned above, participating to an EOSC DIH pilot was very stimulating for us, thanks to the interactions we had with the people involved in the project and the colleagues of the other pilots.”

What’s next?

From a technical viewpoint, we aim to conclude the migration work from Amazon AWS that has started in the pilot. From a business perspective, we will start to follow the indications and suggestions for a possible business exploitation of Pundit.
